Only two animals in the world, humans and great apes, are able to recognize themselves in the mirror. To recognize yourself in a mirror you must have a self-concept, a mental image of yourself on which to base the match. Which, of course, raises the question of where the mental image came from. Are we constructing our sense of self by virtually superimposing other people’s faces on top of our own and somehow sensing the difference? Maybe this is why our self-assurance of our own beauty predictably goes down if we are asked to rate ourselves just after spending time with a substantially more attractive individual.
